The Tale of Tinky's Adventures, as She Learns about Herself and Her New Family!

Hello there! I am here to tell you the many stories of Tinky's life. Tinky is approximately 1-year-old, and is a small ferret who has the energy of a thousand horses. She is my first ferret, and basically going into ownership with little to no experience in owning a ferret, I'm not entirely sure what I am to expect. Basically, this will be a log/story of the experiences gained by owning Tinky. So let's begin...

I always end up on the pet section of Craigslist, even without any interest of buying or adopting a new pet. One day I decided to look for furniture in the free section, as I just moved into a brand new apartment on my own and had absolutely NO furniture. Low and behold there was an ad with blurry pictures of a ferret. Part of me hesitated because usually when animals are free they are either sick or old, but I decided to contact them regardless. Surprisingly, I got a response right away and before I even knew it I was on my way to pick up a ferret.

About an hour later, I was at the owner's house, and when I walked inside their home reeked of pee and fecal matter. Upon entering the room where the ferret was, there were litter boxes lined up with layers upon layers of fecal matter and there were cats everywhere. The smell of urine was enough to burn my eyes and make my nose run. But there she was, this tiny little ferret inside a large rabbit cage. The owner explained to me how she was never able to let her play outside of her cage, and how she's been feeding her dollar store cat food, but she won't eat properly. She gave me the cage, and the supplies she had and I held the ferret close as I looked her over. She was so yellow and reeked of pee. I knew in my heart that I had to get her out of that place. So after conversing with her owner for a few moments and getting the rest of the supplies, I made my way back to my car with the ferret and left.

Part of me was nervous because I've only ever heard negative things about ferrets: that they stink, they're mean, and they poop everywhere! What was I thinking!?

I got home and set up her cage, and brought her inside and put her in her now clean cage with a mix of dry ferret food and the kitty food she was "eating." After about an hour of letting her sit in the cage and distress from the long ride home, I opened her cage door... The little yellow ferret slowly investigated the door being opened and slinked her way out of the cage. I decided to sit on the floor just a few feet away from her cage, that way she would get to know me on her level.

Almost immediately, her whole demeanor changed. She started running as fast as she could in circles, jumping and rolling and sliding on the floor like a little snake. She was spinning after her tail in circles and making what sounded like little piggy sounds. I have never seen a ferret act this way, but then it dawned on me. This was her first time ever to be able to run and explore: her first taste of freedom. My little yellow stink ball. Right then and there my heart melted for her, and I knew I'd love her until time tears us apart. Tinky... Yeah... She's tiny, and stinky. My little Tinky.

SO there you have it, the gist version of the introduction between Tinky and I. The rest of the stories included will be of her adjustment to a normal ferret's life and the many things I've learned from owning her.
