Thanksgiving Is a Great Time to Spoil Your Dog

Who could you be more thankful for than your fluffy pal?

Every year, there’s tons to be thankful for. One of the best things in your life? Man’s best friend. This year, don’t just be thankful for him; treat him! Show him the love. After all, you’d be a lot lonelier without him in your life to eat your leftovers and hog the bed.

Let Them Eat Treats

Look, dogs love to eat. That’s why they give you the big eyes every time you come home with french fries. Sometimes the best way to buy your pet’s love—or give thanks for their presence—is food. Thanksgiving’s arrival means that your pup can join in the feast with thematic foods. Turkey treats, pumpkin pie-flavored dog biscuits, and any table scraps fit for dogs will help show your dog just how much you love him. Some dog food recipes can even help you take care of all those leftovers.

If you do feed your dog food off the table (or anything that doesn’t come pre-made and packaged for dogs), make sure you check to see if it’s food that’s fit to feed dogs. A lot of foods aren’t good for dogs; some can even be deadly. Make sure to stay away from things like chocolate, onions, garlic, and nuts. Also be wary of giving them chicken or turkey—those tiny bones are choking hazards.

It’s a good idea to have a first-aid plan just in case something goes wrong. Your first-aid plan can include anything from the poison control number to instructions on dog CPR. It never hurts to have your vet’s number on hand, or the number of an emergency vet, just in case.

Take Them With You

You know who probably would enjoy a car ride over the hill and through the dale to grandmother’s house? Your dog. Thanksgiving is a great time for family reunions, and any dog owner knows that the dog is a part of the family. Bring together everyone’s pups for some play time. Not only will it make your dog happy, but it’s also fun to watch dogs at play. Make sure to be a good guest, and keep your dog in-check (including cleaning up after them). And besides, if you put your dog in pajamas, it might keep your parents from asking for grandkids this year.

Black Friday

Black Friday isn’t all about cheap TVs and the must-have toy of the season; you can find deals on just about everything. Your dog is no exception. Check your favorite shopping spots for your pup to see if they’ll be open for the shopping craze. A lot of stores, from pet stores to big box stores, offer deals on some of the coolest stuff you can buy your dog. Some stores even offer matching pajamas for you and your pup. Dog beds, treats in bulk, toys, accessories—they’re all items you can use to spoil your best pal. Because who deserves it more?

Local Events

Thanksgiving is a great time for local events in your area. Check the internet, the paper, and keep an eye out in your community. Pet stores often have events for the holidays, but beyond that oftentimes you can find charity walks or meetups designed to include your furry friend. Don’t see anything in the area? Plan something! You’re definitely not the only one looking for activities for your pup. It’s a great chance for both you and your dog to make friends and enjoy the festivities.
