My dad and I are watching soap operas with my mom in her living room. All of a sudden, we hear a knock on the door, moms’ dog begins to bark, so she puts her dog in the back yard. Momma unlocks the door to my Grannie holding something in her hands. I hear a soft whimper, excited, I spring up off the couch as my heart flutters. I look in her arms to see a tiny chiweenie. It was so tiny it almost looked like a mouse.

“Sit and I’ll let you hold her,” my Grannie ordered.

I obviously did what I was told.

“Merry Christmas baby girl,” Mom and Grannie said in unison as Grannie gently laid the smallest living animal I had ever seen on my chest.

“All right, it’s my turn to see the rat,” Dad says next to me.

At that moment I could tell he was in love with this dog. How ironic, since he always told me he hated small dogs all until she came along. We decided to name her Charlotte. Two months later I received a phone call from my Grannie saying that her dog gave birth because she knew I wanted Charlotte to have a playmate. I asked her to keep one of the females until I came down for summer break. She named her Jelly Bean, because of her energy and fur color.

I was at my boyfriend's house watching T.V. in the living room with him and his father when I gotten a phone call from my Dad’s phone, something I could not bare to think was real.

”Brittany, this is your aunt, your dad took Charlotte over to play with our dogs. On the way here, she jumped out his passenger side window. He did everything he could to save her, it was too late.”

My heart sunk to my stomach as I tried to gather the news. I told my boyfriends’ dad what happened and they drove as quick as possible to my aunts so I could say my final goodbye. I ran into the house, eyes blurry holding back tears. I see my Dad holding her limp, lifeless body and I kiss her goodbye. Five months flew by tpo quick. My knees went weak and I hit the floor in tears as my Dad goes to bury her. My boyfriend's jeans became soaked from the tears I shredded. We drove home in silence, except once, he pointed to me where she passed away in tears. Everyday, we pass up where she died to go to my Aunt's.

That night I got a phone call that my Mom and Grannie are in town to surprise us; they felt terrible for trying to surprise us on that horrible day.

Two days later we go to Alabama, where I met my Jelly Bean for the first time. My eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, face as bright as the sun. She was covered in red clay from head to toe playing with her siblings. After we washed her, her fur color shown, pearl white with brown and black spots, eyes mixed with blue and green, with an adorable under bite and back legs bow legged.

When I got home with her, Dad immediately says, "Choose a different name.” It took hours until I found a name.

“Roxy, because of how spunky she is.”

Several months flew by and I had to find a job, so we looked for a playmate for Roxy to have. Petsmart had a event going on with Hearts of Louisiana Humane Society, so Dad took that Friday off to look around. he found one but waited for me to be free of work and school to get it we went back Saturday. We went to a red roofed tent that had kennels lined up all around and in the middle. In the middle there was one kennel that caught Dad's eye with three or four chihuahuas bundled up in the corner.

He shows me the pup he likes. “She licked my hand and was the only one that wagged her tail,” he stated as he grabbed a weak looking chihuahua her eyes dull and back bone showing. Her eyes brightened a little when dad came to get her and licked his cheek. She has brown fur with white paws and soft brown eyes.

“She was returned this morning. The woman said she would not play or eat,” the humane society worker said.

“Must have hated the environment,” Dad replied, as I signed the paperwork.

We come home and put her in the dog pin where Roxy was. She sniffed around curiously and cautiously, as Roxy followed. Roxy stopped looked up at us with her eyes as bright as the sun. Both dogs wagging their tails. Inside the house Roxy tried to give Nicole some of her chew toys to show that this is her forever home.

As weeks passed Nicole's health became better her muscles thickened, fur fuller, and backbone no longer visible. Getting Nicole has made Roxy a happier dog and gave a pup in animal shelter a new beginning.
