A Creative Short Story of Unconditional Love and Loyalty

Suki Boy

The bedroom door flew open and in bounded Suki, fresh from his morning walk. He landed squarely on top of my bed, barking his excitement. I squealed with delight, laughing, whilst trying to hide under the duvet in an attempt to avoid being licked to death. Once I thought he had calmed down, I peered over the bedding. I held tightly onto the sheet ready to hide again if he lunged at my face but he just sat there, tail wagging, looking down at me with his big brown eyes. They seemed to stare deep into my soul. I felt an overwhelming sense of unconditional love and happiness. How I wished he could talk to me. I wondered what he would say. We understood each other well enough, though—we were a good team my little fur face and I.

He pawed at my hand, indicating I could pet him now and I laughed. He was so cheeky. I paused to admire him and reached out to ruffle his fur. His scraggy coat refused to be brushed and the highlights on his brow that mother nature created only added to his cuteness. An impatient little boy, Suki pawed at my hand again to ensure the petting continue. He always made me smile. How appropriately named he was. His name was Japanese which meant "The Beloved."

MY INSPIRATION

Creating a short story about my dog was inevitable. I was doing a creative writing course at the time and I felt I could write more passionately about topics I had the most knowledge of... and my unconditional love I had for my dog and him for me was one of those topics.

I was always inspired by the story of Greyfriars Bobby. The true story of a little Skye Terrier who lived in Edinburgh, Scotland many years ago with his Master Auld Jock. When his Master died, the little dog spent 14 years visiting his master's grave until he passed himself.

I always felt like my best friend Suki was a bit like that dog Greyfriars Bobby. He had a scruffy little coat of fur which refused to be brushed and a perfect little row of white teeth. He had a very proud and fast walk on his long legs and his curly tail was always held high.

I would teach Suki tricks and talk to him like he was a little human. He would even pose for my camera and then I would show him photographs of himself on my Apple Mac Computer.

His favourite food was cheese. He would do anything for cheese and that included stealing. Whether it was socks, my panties, my father's tobacco, slippers, or whatever else he could find. He figured out that if he stole something belonging to me or another family member then he would receive a piece of cheese in exchange. But this also backfired on me because this dog was so intelligent. He realised at a later point he could keep both the object and eat the cheese fast in order to get even more cheese!

My mother would bribe him when I was home for the weekends visiting. She would take him out for a walk knowing that I would be at home by the time they returned. When Suki continued to pull in the directions of another walk and refused to return home, my mum would tell him I was back home. And he would rush her off her feet to get back to see me. :)

He reminds me of a quote written on Greyfriars Bobby's Gravestone, Edinburgh, Scotland which reads "Here lies Greyfriars Bobby. Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all."
