Porifera
Porifera, more commonly known as sponges, are the only phylum belonging to the subkingdom Parazoa. These simple creatures are among the least evolutionarily advanced animals in the world. Although they may lack complexity, this group of animals are evidently extraordinarily successful, having been able to continue survival, successfully passing on their genes for over six hundred million years. Their unique feeding system and lack of digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems are some of the factors that differentiate them from any other animal.

Personal Freedom
Despite what some people may think, personal freedom isn’t automatic. It’s something that must be achieved for oneself. This is done in different ways. For example, if someone does what they think is right, despite what everyone else tells them, that person has achieved personal freedom. Also, when someone speaks their mind about something that is difficult for them to talk about, that person has achieved personal freedom as well. Even when someone simply becomes more confident in themselves, they too achieve this freedom.

Messages Portrayed About Women in Television
When watching television, we hardly stop to analyze what subliminal messages the ads and shows are portraying. We usually just pick up the obvious messages and the rest is placed somewhere in the back of our minds. After thoroughly analyzing one television channel for 2 hours, I began to realize that a lot more ideas and messages are entering our minds than what we may see on the surface. In my writing I am going to be analyzing the ideas portrayed in the shows and commercials presented on the television station “Nick at Nite” and examine the way they they depict beauty images and how they represent the beauty norms of our society.

Delayed Gratification
What if I told you that you could have $100 right now? No catch, just free money! You would probably say “Heck yeah!”, take the money and head on over to the mall and pick up a pair of those nice shoes you’ve been eyeballing. Hold on just a second though. What if I told you that there was another option? How does $1000 sound? I know what you’re thinking, what’s the catch? Well you’re right, there is one. In order to receive 10 times the original offer you have to wait. You have to be able to wait 3 months before getting your hand on any of the money. Instead of waiting these long months you can opt out at any time and just settle for the quick cash of $100. The choice to wait in order to receive a greater reward is known as the method of decision making called delayed gratification. Delaying gratification means to make a choice that limits the ability to receive something now, in order to be able to have something better later. Choosing to practice this method of decision making throughout life certainly can lead to success, and here’s why.

Socially Constructed Gender Roles
Once when I was 6 years old, I recall a day when my brother and I were playing with our toys while we waited for our mom to finish preparing dinner. My brother was playing with his toy cars and I was playing with my baby dolls. We decided to play with our toys together so I put one of my baby dolls in his toy monster truck and we took turns pushing it around. My brother decided to take the baby doll out of the monster truck toy to put it into another car. However, as soon as my brother picked up the doll, my mom had just walked in the room to check on us. She noticed that my brother was holding the baby doll and exclaimed how cute he looked holding it. This caught the attention of my dad who, unlike my mom, was not amused. My dad snatched the doll from him, “Babies are for girls! You’re a man son so you play with boy toys...Here.” he said sternly as he handed him a G.I. Joe action figure. As a 6 year old girl, I was very confused. I had seen my father hold my brother as a baby and feed him and care for him and show him affection, so why then were “babies for girls” only? This is just one example of how I was exposed to situations in which I was told that one had to be a certain gender in order to do certain things or act a certain way. In this essay I’m going to share with you the concept of the social construction of gender and how this applied to my life growing up, shaping me to be who I am today.

The Truth Behind Dog Breeding
Have you ever seen one of those sad puppy commercials on television with the hungry dogs in the animal shelters? Whenever I see one of these commercials I feel a sudden urge to grab my dog and hug him. My eyes begin to water and heartache begins to take over my emotions. Sadly we humans are doing much more than we may realize to contribute to the high numbers of hungry dogs on the streets and in shelters. One aspect that plays a major role in this issue is the support of dog breeding. Throughout this piece of writing I hope to inform my readers of the unethical and immoral aspects of dog breeding. I will be explaining the great lack of responsibility being displayed when choosing to breed or to buy from a breeder over making the choice to adopt, especially when there are easier alternatives available. I will discuss the overpopulation crisis that many dogs in the US face every day. I will also go on to explain why these dogs are overpopulated in the first place, as well as provide ways that anyone, even you, can help this cause.
