The biggest dogs in the world can have a reputation for being intimidating, but once you get to know their breeds, they are anything but that. Some of the tallest and heaviest dogs in the world are also some of the most loyal, affectionate, and loving breeds that will quickly become your best friend and protector.

Believe it or not, dogs of this size are often relaxed and patient, compared to smaller breeds who may be a bit hyperactive. This is a list of some of the most enormous breeds in the world, and what makes these gentle giants so great.

Great Dane

When thinking of the biggest dogs in the world, the Great Dane comes to mind first. As one of the tallest breeds to exist, the Great Dane can grow up to 44 inches tall, from paw to shoulder. So if they wanted to stand on their hind legs, they would most likely be taller than you.

As one of the giant-sized dogs in the world, Great Danes are also known for their elegance and smooth stride. They often have an easygoing personality, as well as being patient and friendly. These dogs are also easy to train and somewhat active, needing a walk at least twice or three times a day.

Kuvasz

Most well-known for being a livestock guard, the Kuvasz is one of the most fearless large dog breeds. As one of the biggest dogs in the world, this dog has an intense loyalty to their owner, on top of being protective and courageous.

Plus, this breed is muscular as well as agile. Their maximum height will range from 28 to 30 inches and they can weigh up to 115 pounds. That's a big, but very loyal pooch.

Tibetan Mastiff

Another breed that is extremely protective is the Tibetan Mastiff. They are known as being a watchful guardian and are known most for their huge double coat, either brown or black with tan markings, or even shades of gold. These giant dogs are calm and patient, and work great with children.

They have an average energy level, and strive in any weather conditions. These dogs can grow up to 30 inches tall and even weigh up to 160 pounds. Plus, they can live up to 15 years. As a great family guardian and patient companion, this giant dog is often seen in American dog shows.

Russian Black Terrier

The Russian Black Terrier is a smart and courageous dog, but most importantly, they are one of the biggest dogs in the world. Growing up to 30 inches tall and weighing up to 140 pounds, this giant breed is most known for their large noggin.

With a brick-shaped head and a confident, but sometimes stubborn personality, this dog has one of the warmest coats in the world. Known to strive in any of the coldest habitats, the Russian Black Terrier can live up to 12 years of age.

Saint Bernard

Another very popular breed in the United States, and one of the first to come to mind when thinking of the world's largest dogs, is the famous Saint Bernard. An extremely lovable dog, while also being massively powerful, this breed can stand up to 30 inches tall and weigh up to 180 pounds.

Their wrinkled brown and stout muzzle, the Saint Bernard has a lot of personality just at first glance. They love long walks and will train easily. Plus, they are extremely intelligent and work great with children.

Newfoundland

The Newfoundland breed is most known for their heroism. As one of the biggest dogs in the world, this dog has lifesaving reflexes, and have a talent for long-distance swimming.

As a strong and passionate dog, they are also patient and devoted. Newfoundland dogs are the perfect dog for situations that require obedience, agility, and specifically water tests or carting scenarios. Plus, they are easily trained and will grow up to 28 inches tall and 150 pounds.

Leonberger

A calm yet confident breed that is known for its size, work ethic, and determination, the Leonberger is one of the best working dog breeds in the world, as well as one of the biggest. The Leonberger is known for its companionship and grace.

But most importantly, they can grow up to 32 inches and weigh up to 170 pounds; that's a giant dog, especially considering the size of their coat. They have a sweet expression with dark brown eyes. And they even work well with children, and enjoy a nice long walk on the daily.

Anatolian Shepherd Dog

Another one of the biggest dogs in the world is the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, a powerful and loyal breed. Though they might not be known for their cuddliness, the dog is calm and very intelligent, but is most known for being territorial and extremely protective. As a somewhat active breed, these dogs love a long walk and will run around the yard for hours.

Plus, they grow up to 29 inches tall and can weigh from 80 to 150 pounds. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog comes in all different color patterns and don't require much grooming, as their coat is short.

Great Pyrenees

Personally, we believe that this is one of the most adorable giant dogs on the list. As a very agile yet strong bread, this mountain dog can stand up to 23 inches and will weigh anywhere above 100 pounds.

As a calm and smart breed, these dogs are very affectionate and loyal toward their owner. Plus, they are patient and graceful. Their white coat is what makes them so appealing, as it is lush and large.

Dogue de Bordeaux

Last, but certainly not least, on our list of the biggest dogs in the world is the Dogue de Bordeaux. Known for their affectionate and loyal personality, these dogs are very powerful and muscular. A French breed, the Dogue de Bordeaux has a very stocky body, a feature they're most known for.

Though they grow up to 24 inches tall, the dog's size is attributed to its weight, at over 110 pounds and growing. They are very smart and courageous dogs who are lovable and loyal.
