Human beings and dogs have an incredible shared history of working together as a team to accomplish a singular goal. Even when the family pooch is just sniffing around the dinner table looking for fallen crumbs he’s providing a cleaning service, and of course, when snuggling on the couch, companionship. Dogs are very driven, determined animals and humans have been more than happy to let their four legged counterparts excel in their chosen fields. Canines can find a purpose for themselves in nearly any aspect of life and below are just a few of the excellent careers dogs can build for themselves.

1) Ranch Dogs:

Nothing makes for a good ranch dog like the tenacity, explosive speed and agility found in both Heelers (as known as Australian cattle dogs) and Border Collies. These animals are sharp as a tack, and they take their jobs very seriously. Border Collies are master multi-taskers. They first must digest, individually, what their humans require of them and then each understand their role in the pack to direct massive herds of sheep. Such an impressive undertaking can be seen here in this spectacular video. The film Babe immortalized the brilliant maneuverings of sheep herding Border Collies, but Heelers are just as adept at herding. And they typically are in charge of handling much larger animals: cattle.

2) Canine Warriors:

Long has the union of man and dogs resulted in the spectacular result of two predators hunting as one. Canines have been recorded fighting alongside humans as early as 600 B.C. and still play a vital role in modern warfare. Mike Ritland’s book “Trident K9 Warriors: My Tales from the Training Ground to the Battlefield with the Elite Navy SEAL Canines” highlights the many ways that the illustrious Belgian Malanois breed have saved humans on the battlefield. These awe inspiring dogs can not only sniff out traps laid by enemy combatants but the enemy combatants themselves. They will even engage with the enemy when necessary.

3) Bomb Sniffers:

Humanity's major transportation hubs such as airports and train stations have been kept under the watchful noses of dogs like Ttirado for years. Ttirado is a Labrador who has been under the employ of the Indianapolis International Airport to sniff out explosive odors. Dogs like these are trained since puppyhood to accomplish their goal and can cost anywhere between $5000 and $25000. Bomb sniffing dogs work every day to keep travelers safe but unfortunately, the United States is falling short on their supply of these invaluable canines.

4) Court Facility Dogs:

Our four legged companions do not always find themselves in physically stressful careers. Dogs can provide a quiet, amazing service for children called to appear in court simply by being present with them. The FLA Four Legged Advocates, Inc. helps victims of crimes by providing them with these incredible dogs. The dogs serve to help victims remain calm while being questioned about their ordeals and feel confident enough to testify.

5) Reading Therapy:

It may shock some readers that dogs have become valuable in nearly every aspect of human society, including the education of our own young. The PAWS for Reading program, established in 2005, provides children with a silent, friendly and non judgmental audience to whom they may practice reading aloud. In case you haven't guessed, the audience members are dogs. Libraries even invite these service animals in so parents can bring their children to not only pet a cute animal but take advantage of a free educational service so they may improve their reading abilities.

Dogs have proved themselves to be intensely important to humanity's development as a species. These delightful, terrifying, and loving creatures will fight for us, sniff out dangers for us and simply be there for us when we need them. It is important for all humans to remember that canines are not walking teddy bears, but intelligent creatures, armed with both a mouthful of sharp teeth and a heart full of intense loyalty and love.
