10 Reasons Cats Make Great Pets

Reasons for the Undecided Potential Pet Owner

Cats have been around for thousands and thousands of year. We have big cats. We have small cats. But the cats I think everyone is most familiar with are the domesticated, fun-loving cats we have at home.

But what about the people who have been thinking about a pet and just haven't been convinced that a cat is a great pet?

Now before I go on, I'm not saying that dogs, reptiles, birds, or any other mammals would not make great pets. I myself have had about every single pet at least at one point in my life. I currently have two cats and a bearded dragon. Everyone has an animal they can connect to and there is a perfect pet for anyone.

However, there are many contributions by a cat though if you are still choosing. And I will be happy to tell you why.

1: They're great cuddlers.

I remember before I was in a happy relationship, I always looked forward to coming home, and laying down to find my kitty snuggled on top of me or by me. Even though I was single, I knew I always had a companion waiting for me at home. I was never truly alone.

2: They are great therapy.

There is nothing like a kitty's purr. It's soothing and relaxing. The vibrations they make while repairing their muscles and bones are calming. And it's very hard to stay tense or upset when a cat is purring next to you.

When the right cat comes along, they'll be the first, and sometimes only one, who comes to your side. They'll get in the line of fire just to head butt your head and instantly calm you down. They always know how you're feeling. They'll be there for you when you need them most.

3: They have personalities.

Like a lot of animals, cats have personalities. And it's always fun to watch them be themselves. They can be crazy and never grow out of their kitten hood. They can be completely relaxed and mellow, not getting up except to eat or use the litter box. They can be smart and cunning. Or they can even be dumb. No matter what, though, they have their likes and dislikes, just like we do. But you love them no matter what.

4: They'll protect your home.

Cats will always tell you when you're in a bad place.

If you believe in the supernatural, cats, like many animals, have the ability to sense otherworldly beings in a place. They'll let you know if a place is haunted or not.

They can also sense when a person is bad. If your cat doesn't like a person, listen to them. They'll keep the bad people out of your life. Your cat knows what's best for you.

5: They're great helpers.

Your cat will always want to help you out around the house once they've chosen you as their human. Whether it be lying on the blankets while making the bed or attacking the plastic bags on the ground from putting away groceries, you can always be assured that cats will help you out.

6: They'll pick you.

One of the great things about being a pet owner, and one of the most beautiful things to watch, is watching a bond formed between human and animal.

Cats are not the only ones, but they will choose their human. I remember my beautiful kitty Mallow (May she be eating lots of wet food at Rainbow Bridge) chose me by simply hopping on my shoulders and head butting my head. I couldn't get her off. And from that point on, we were inseparable.

As mentioned before, they know who the good and bad people are. They know when you're upset and they know when you need them most. The right kitty will come to you.

7: You adapt your life around them.

When important figures come into our lives and we love them, we tend to adapt our lives around them so we can live together in peace. It's the same for cats.

Since all cats have different personalities, they tend to have habits and traits about them that you adapt your life around. For example, my kitty Phantom does not like to be locked out of rooms when I am inside, and he doesn't like to be locked inside a room with me either. So I haven't gone to the bathroom in my own home without the door open a crack in the four years I've had him. It honestly feels weird now to have the door completely closed in my own home.

Or how I make sure I never leave my hair ties out where he can get them. My Phantom kitten is a klepto and loves to steal them. Even if I'm at a friend's house and I see a hair tie out, I will move it and hide it, out of instinct. It's a habit I've grown into due to my cat.

At first, it can be a little frustrating as you are learning about your cat and what they are like, but once you know, you get used to it. And you wouldn't have it any other way.

8: They're great for busy people.

As much as I would love to get a dog, I will never get one due to the fact that I am out of the house a lot. Dogs require a lot of attention and maintenance, which I cannot provide. It wouldn't be fair to the dog that I can't take care of them properly.

Cats, on the other hand, are more independent. Of course, they require the love and care any animal needs, but if you're the type of person that likes to socialize or you're at work all day, or just plain busy, a cat might be a better choice for a pet.

They go to the bathroom on their own and don't need to be taken out. They don't get too lonely when you're gone but are really excited to see you when you get home.

You're able to do what you need to do and still come home to a happy and healthy pet to spend the night with.

9: You need hightened reflexes? Play with a cat!

If you end up with a cat who has a playful side, even if it only pops out once in a while, then you can heighten your reflexes.

When Phantom was a kitten, I used to attack his belly with my bare hand and he'd attack it back. It quickly turned into a game of my hand slowly coming down at him from above and him waiting, and finally striking it at any given moment. I never knew when he was going to reach up and grab it. I heightened my reflexes pretty quickly this way. And I still got to play with my kitty.

If you need to heighten your reflexes, play with a cat... where your hand is the toy.

10: They're family.

Like any other animal you may adopt and call your own, they're family. They are your children and you are going to be the proudest pet parent in the world. They bring you heart ache and stress but mostly, they bring you joy, therapy, and a friendship like no other.
