The Reality of Getting a Puppy

It's not all cuddles 24/7.

Let's be honest. Puppies are quite possibly the cutest thing God ever created. Ever. Their little legs trip over each other and you never mind it when their cute wet noses rub against your face. It's just so cute!

But let's be even more honest. Taking care of a puppy, especially for the first time, is no walk in the park. They are a lot to deal with and at times you wonder if it's worth it (and feel like a horrible person for even thinking that).

1. They're expensive.

Honestly, your parents were right to say no when you wanted a puppy as a kid. They were the ones who would have to pay for everything.

It seems like they need shots all the time. Those vet bills add up fast. There have been so many times I've had to wonder if all these shots are really necessary. Well if you don't want your dog to die or get sick, they are.

Then there's also puppy food, a bed, a kennel, and puppy-appropriate toys. If you rent your house, you will likely have a pet fee and pet rent. The list is endless really.

2. They're always hyper.

Like, always hyper. How can so much energy fit in one tiny dog? Sometimes I just wanna relax and watch TV, but who can do that with a puppy jumping around and getting hurt all the time? And I know mine isn't the only who randomly runs in circles as fast as he can for no reason. Why do they do that?

3. Fleas are the worst.

Some people forget to give their dogs their flea medicine. Other people don't bother because they don't go near other dogs. Either way, your dog will probably get fleas at some point. This will possibly be the one time you seriously consider getting rid of your dog. Fleas feel impossible to get rid of (they're not) and it can feel like forever before they're gone. They even stay in your house once they’re off your dog. Everything I thought I knew about fleas was wrong. When you think they’re finally gone, you find another one in your bed. Seriously, just give your dog some medicine. It's more money, but it's so worth it.

4. They need to be trained.

Otherwise they are wild, don't listen, and act like they have no sense. You can pay someone to do the training for you (another thing to add to them being expensive) or just take the time and effort to do it yourself. Even basic commands can go a long way. There are a ton of videos and articles online if you want to save a lot of money. The key is to just be patient. Your puppy is (probably) doing the best he can.

5. You have a forever friend.

They’re referred to as man’s best friend for a reason, people. Dogs really are so loyal. Even when you get mad at them, they still love you. They want to be with you no matter what and they’re always excited to see you. Have you ever come home to a dog who acted like you hadn’t been gone for years? They love playing with you and cuddling when they're tired. You can talk to them without fear of judgment. What more could you possibly ask for?

Yes, dogs are a lot. It takes a lot of time and effort (and yes, money) to take care of them. But at the end of the day, it's worth it. They’re basically your child. Dogs are the best. Feel free to disagree, but if you do, you're wrong.
