The Loyalty of a Friend

What is your ideal loyal friend?

What is your ideal loyal friend? Is it someone you trust? Someone you love? Some one who cares about you and never desires to see you hurt? Well I have a short story about a dog who always seemed to amaze me with his kindness and gentleness towards people.

About a year ago I found out that there was a German Shepherd for sale and my parents was thinking about buying him. He was only 8 weeks only at the time but I was so excited about the fact that I would be getting a dog that would stay inside since my mom was determined that we would never have an inside animal. I remember coming home from school one day finding the puppy in our kitchen. I couldn’t help but just pick him up and love on him for hours. Going through the puppy stage was rough but not terrible. As he grew older I started to get sad that I was no longer able to hold the puppy that I once could hold no problem. Now he was 60 pounds and was starting to be independent and didn’t need help getting down steps or having to have his potty messes cleaned up.

The older he became the more calm he became. Recently, my 120 black German Shepherd was playing roughly with one of our new baby calves and hurt her. I didn’t yell at him or punished him but I kind of ignored him for a few minutes to show that he had hurt my feelings. About 20 minutes later, my parents had gone to bed and I was telling my dog goodnight and that I loved him and he slowly got up and walked over to the bar stool I was sitting at and put his head in my lap and looked up at me directly into my hazel eyes as if he was saying, "I’m sorry I brought you disappointment earlier." It seems as if as a young puppy, my dog needed a lot of help but now he is independent and comes to show love even if I am not giving him attention. It’s like a reminder to me that he will always want to be there for me even if he makes me mad or it’s just a bad day. Does a loyal friend have to be a human? Could it not be your dog who you can tell anything to and they won’t say a word and won’t judge you? An animal who doesn’t hold grudges and loves you even if you just fussed at them? I believe a dog can be a loyal friend and a loyal friend to a dog could be you.
