Puppy Love

Two Dogs. One Love. Two second chances.

It started off one day. My boyfriend and I went to the pet store like we usually do every month. We went to a different pet store than we usually went to (further away from our home) and we... well I decided to go to the shelter for the heck of it. We arrived at the shelter with NO intentions of adopting a dog that day. As we walked by all the kennels, we didn’t see a dog that completely caught our eye and then it happened... there was puppies in the back last kennel. My boyfriend fell in love with the male puppy that (surprisingly) didn’t get adopted, but the two girls had already been spoken for. So as I go to see this puppy, I fell in love and said let’s meet him outside of the kennel. So we got a volunteer to help us to the private room they have so you can see how the dog reacts to you. Well needless to say Capone and my boyfriend had fallen in love with each other.

Since he was still a puppy, they needed to take him back to the kennel and keep him a couple more days, so he could be neutered. A couple days pass and we come back to get him with a brand new harness and leash. He was so scared to walk with the leash and harness, my boyfriend had to carry him the rest of the way to the car. We found out that Capone’s litter had been found underneath a vehicle and that explains why he was so terrified of cars, especially ones moving.

We get home with our new puppy, introduce him to everyone else in the house, and they all fell in love with this big black and white Pitbull Great Dane mixed dog. He’s the sweetest and most gentle dog anyone could ask for. He definitely helped me show my grandma that not all Pitbulls are mean dogs. After everyone met him, it was time to introduce him to our other little dogs and give him a bath, since he stunk. He instantly tried playing and was so happy. He fit right in with our little pack of dogs... even if he is the youngest and biggest one out of the bunch. After a few months go by, I looked at my boyfriend and told him that Capone needs someone to play with that’s his size and can match his energy. Our other dogs are older and smaller, so they don’t play like a puppy anymore.

My boyfriend didn’t agree that we needed another dog, but I somehow got him to one day walk around the shelter and just “look” at the dogs that are there. After going to the back kennels, I saw this one dog jumping in her kennel. She wasn’t trying to get anyone else’s attention except mine and my boyfriend's. So I called my boyfriend over to look at this girl that has so much energy and is so happy. He wasn’t sure about her, because of how hyper she was, she was jumping to the top of the kennel and the kennels are not small/short. We took this hyper, happy and talkative girl out to meet her and I loved her. So we had them hold her for us so we could go back home, grab Capone, and bring him to meet her and see how they got along. We took them both to the outside play area where they take dogs to meet their potential new owners and family members.

Capone and Freya fell in love and wouldn’t leave each other’s side. So right then and there my boyfriend looked at me, I looked at him and said she’s the one. They love each other, you couldn’t tear them apart. So we went back inside, paid for her adoption, and she had to be taken in the back so she could get spayed. Capone didn’t like being away from her and once the volunteers took her and she couldn’t be seen anymore, Capone fell to the ground screaming and crying, because he wanted her. It was so embarrassing at the time, because everyone at the shelter stopped and looked at me and Capone and asked if he was okay. All I could do was look around and say he’s fine, he just fell in love and didn’t want her to go away.

As my boyfriend is at the counter getting the papers and paying, the volunteer says “I think she’s already fixed, let me go check” so we got excited. She comes back and tells us she’s fixed and we can take her home today; we were all excited. Another volunteer came around the corner with our new dog and Capone got up so fast and was so happy, they both couldn’t stop jumping and playing with each other. Ever since we brought Freya home, they have not been separated. They love each other so much. I am so happy to say we were able to not only show our dogs love, but to save two pitbulls from the shelter. They have the best unconditional love for one another. It’s an incredible thing to see. They love each other, lay with each other and irritate each other, but it’s the most amazing thing to witness; how two different dogs with two different pasts can come together, meet and get a second chance at a better life. Adopting these dogs has been the best thing to happen to not only them, but to me and my boyfriend. I didn’t just save Capone but Capone saved my boyfriend. And Freya gave Capone a loving partner. It’s a big win in our home.
