A Real Best Friend

Never underestimate the friendship between dogs and their owners.

A few days ago, I remember seeing all over social media that it was “best friends day.” There were endless posts of people talking about how much they loved their best friend and how they could not live without them. So many images of people hanging out together and having fun. And what did I post about? My dog, Mabel. She is my best friend without a doubt. I know that many people don’t understand it. They find it weird or sad for someone like me to be closer to a dog than to most humans. But I have never let those types of people get to me, because in my opinion, dogs can make much better friends than anyone else can.

First of all, dogs have so much love to give. They are always excited to see you and look up to you as if you’re the only person in the world. Sure, people can sometimes be that excited to see each other, but it is nothing compared to a dog’s dedication. People come and go in our lives and can change quite frequently over time. But as long as we are there for our dogs and give them the love they need, then they will always be there by our side. For me, I know that every time I come home from class, Mabel is always there, thrilled to see me. She runs up to me with her tail wagging like crazy as if she hasn’t seen me in years. It’s impossible for me not to smile whenever she comes running up to me. Those are the kind of qualities that a true best friend needs to have.

Also, a dog will not judge you. They will not betray you. They will not get bored with you. I know that true human friends won’t either, but with dogs, it’s a guarantee. They love going for walks with you, playing with you, and taking all of your attention. But then sometimes they’re perfectly content just being near you and knowing you’re there. To them, you are the most important person in the world. Often times, I notice that Mabel always tries to lay as close to me as she can. If I get up and go into a different room, she usually follows, just so she can lay by me and get some extra pets. She is more loyal than I can even explain as I’m sure most best friends are.

As we all know, dogs are just so sweet and adorable. It’s so hard to resist them. They are always able to cheer their owners up without even needing to say anything. If you’re sad, it can definitely be helpful to talk to someone else, but nothing can compare to the healing powers of petting a dog. Whenever I have a bad day, I always know that Mabel will be there for me as soon as I get come and just petting her for a while can instantly raise my spirits again. That’s why, even if you don’t have your own dog for a best friend, I encourage you to pet every dog you can. Not only will it help cheer you up, but the dog will always appreciate it greatly. I absolutely adore how whenever I go for a walk, everyone stops to greet my best friend.

Never underestimate the power of a human and dog being best friends. A dog can bring you more joy than you can ever imagine and can give you the love and support you need. Never take a dog for granted because they could end up being the best friend you ever had.
